Sage Fried Chicken and Waffles

There’s nothing like the classic chicken and waffles. Add a little sage and a bourbon maple syrup and you’ll be in a food coma in no time!

I love this meal, because it’s not only deeply satisfying for fried food cravings, but I can save waffles for breakfasts throughout the week. Personally I don’t like reheating fried food so I only make enough chicken for one dinner.

I like to make my chicken and waffles with leige waffles, because they have a great crunch to the outside but the inside is soft and oh so sugary! I’ve tried many leige waffles recipes and so far my favorite comes fromSuitcases and Sippy Cups so hop over there for the waffle recipe!

Sage Fried Chicken

Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: Stovetop, 10 minutes

  • 3-5 Chicken breasts
  • 1/2c. Flour
  • 1/4tsp Pepper
  • 1tsp Salt +additional for sprinkling
  • 1/4tsp Garlic powder
  • 1/2tsp Paprika
  • 2eggs
  • 1tbsp Water
  • 1/4tsp dried sage
  • 1c. Vegetable oil


  1. Lay the chicken breasts out on a large cutting board and cover with plastic wrap. Using a meat mallet (or anything else you have to beat chicken with) pound the chicken until it’s all about the same thickness through the breast and to each other.
  2. Set up your breading station. In one medium bowl or dish whisk the eggs and tbsp of water. In another medium dish or plate mix the flour and all spices except for the sage.
  3. Pat dry your chicken breasts and season with salt and the 1/4tsp sage.
  4. Coat each chicken breast in the flour mixture.
  5. Coat each floured breast in the egg wash.
  6. Coat in flour again.
  7. Heat oil over medium high heat in a large pan or cast iron skillet.
  8. When oil is hot add each chicken breast and cook for about 5 minutes per side or until breading is golden brown and chicken is cooked through.
  9. Put hot golden chicken on top of a sweet liege waffle, drench in bourbon syrup and prepare for a food coma.

Bourbon Maple Syrup

Cook: Stovetop, 10 minutes

  • 1/2c. Maple syrup
  • 3tbsp Bourbon whiskey (or 1 shot glass)


  1. In a small pot over medium heat add the maple syrup and bourbon.
  2. Bring to a simmer and simmer for 10 minutes.
  3. Enjoy over waffles, pancakes, chicken, french toast, etc.
